Our first location out of Tampa. And where did we head to? Brandon. For some time now, whenever I go to Brandon’s World of Beer location, there is a joint taco place next door that’s always crowded. Now the name, I’ll agree with you, is a bit odd–Fuzzy’s Tacos. But they’re anything but Fuzzy. Don’t let it weird you out! Anyplace that serves its tacos with corn-based shells deserves to have a thorough look through its menu and what it has to offer. So today, we visited Fuzzy’s Tacos.

As for the name… who is Fuzzy?!

I mean it’s “Fuzzy’s” (possessive), so I was so curious as to who Fuzzy was…

Getting there at prime dinner hour (6:45PM) I wasn’t expecting both WOB and Fuzzy’s to be so packed. There were barely parking spaces outside, let alone spaces inside to sit!

Inside, you walk up to a huge menu, and you’re frankly uncertain as to what to try. Everything you might expect in a Mexican-esque place is found on the menu, ranging from burritos, quesadillas, soups, chips and dip, tacos, sandwiches, and more. When you look around Fuzzy’s, it has a sports-bar feel to it. Very similar to Tijuana Flats, actually.

You order, you pick a table (or at the bar), and wait for your number to get called. Then you walk up to the food counter to retrieve your food. Definitely no “restaurant” feel to it.

As you can see, the prices are decent, but nowhere does it state any Taco Tuesday deals… That’s why you’ve got to ask! They have a banner up at the register that reminds you of Taco Tuesday, but in case you don’t want to forget, the chicken, pork, and beef tacos are $1.59 instead of $1.99. Now, based on past Taco Tuesday experiences, it doesn’t seem like much of a deal. $0.40 off of those specific, generic tacos? It was slightly disappointing.

But we’re here. And we’re going to enjoy our Taco Tuesday. Making the most of it… and the (less than) $1.00 I saved…

You should have seen the massive amount of food that was on our table! It was awesome and amazing and magical and perfect.

To start things off, the chips were perfect. Excellent crisp, not greasy, and some sort of cajun-salt powder sprinkled on top! Fuzzy’s chips and dips (queso and guac) were pretty good. The queso was a bit thinned, but full of flavor. It would be even better with a kick, but tasty nonetheless. The guacamole, on the other hand, was thick with chunky pieces of avocado, onions, and tomatoes. (Towards the end of our meal when we were still finishing our chips, yet had dip left. An employee stopped by to pick up our extra baskets, and offered to give us extra free chips to finish our dip!)

The tacos? Well there were some great tasting ones… and some mediocre (perhaps not so great tasting) ones. The shredded beef? Not recommended. The taste of the meat wasn’t so spectacular; my companion and I both agreed it was a poor choice. The regular beef was great, though! I thought there was a great amount of flavor and quality from the regular beef taco. So, beef taco? Recommended. When I ordered the California Heat taco, let’s just say I got my hopes up. The girl who placed my order said it was absolutely, hands down the best taco and she would recommend it. Maybe it was just hyped to much but… it was just okay. The chicken taco? Recommended. Although there was quite a few juicy liquids falling from the taco, taste-wise it was great. I heard through the grapevine, (across the table) that the spicy pork taco was also tasty. Although I can’t say for myself, I’m going to trust the judgment and mark: maybe recommended. The grilled shrimps from the California Heat taco were probably the highlight of the taco, and so I can just imagine how scrumptious the by-itself shrimp taco would be…

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

Let’s face it. As much as we’d like to, we can’t go out every Tuesday and enjoy the abundant tacos Tampa Bay joints have to offer. There will be Tuesdays where you have to accept the fact that you won’t be going out of your way to enjoy happy hour with a pair of tacos, or to your local Taco Bell if you’re so desperate enough. The solution?

Who says staying at home will take away your taco experience? Recently at Costco (in Brandon) I came across some samples–as you do in any wholesale environment. After sampling, and being unimpressed with salty queso & chips, super sweet mango salsa, I bumped into the lucky vendor handing out mini tacos with guacamole. They were good. Really good, actually. So I got a box! I knew there’d be a moment in time where I wouldn’t be able to go out for my tacos, and I’d need some emergency tacos at home. Today happened to be that day.

On my way home for the day, I knew I would need some guacamole with these tacos if I was going to go all out for this frozen meal. Luckily, Chipotle was on the way. We haven’t gotten to Chipotle’s delicious guacamole yet, or their great tasting steak and tofu, or even their great value for their burrito bowls. One day. For now, I can tell you that their guacamole is whipped in a perfect storm of ripe avocados, onions, cilantro, lime–all of these flavors can be found on your taste buds.

For a $1.95 you can get a small cup of fresh guacamole at your local Chipotle. I chose this guacamole instead of ones found at the supermarket since I know it’s made fresh! Guacamole is a great dip for these mini tacos, whether you’re preparing them for a meal or as appetizers. Sour cream would also be a great side item, but I do not recommend salsa or queso, as the tacos are moist enough. I opted out of sour cream, and went with guacamole for caloric reasons. If this doesn’t stop you, or even if you prefer the taste of one or the other, I say just go for it!

As for preparing the Mini Tacos…

They are microwaveable, but I wanted them made to perfection. What’s the path to perfection? Conventional oven.

If they are thawed they will take less time to bake

And now we wait…

And wait…

And wait…

And wait…

You know the saying, “when you watch a pot boil, it takes longer”?

I just really wanted these tacos…

They came out hot and crispy after 12 minutes in the oven. The ooze you see flowing out of the tacos isn’t quite liquified, it seems to be more sauce-like.

I set these mini tacos in a way to be my dinner, not appetizer. I suppose they are meant to be more appetizer finger foods rather than an actual meal…

Inside these moist and crispy mini tacos, you can find whole chunks of white meat chicken, cheese, and miscellaneous sauce. Not overflowed, the sauce found in these mini help them be filled to the brim. “Bite size” is a bit of an overstatement, if you’re not the size of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, I’d say they’re two-bite sizes. This means I needed quite a few tacos to make this a dinner meal. I can’t imagine the microwave heating method to be superior than the conventional oven. The conventional oven allows for prime crispiness.

Don’t forget to dip and enjoy!

Cinco de Mayo vs. Cinco de Drinko

Cinco de Mayo vs. Cinco de Drinko

After DAYS of research, trying to find a great place to enjoy this Cinco de Mayo, a friend and I took a short trip down to Ybor City. Many places offered drink deals on this Cinco de Mayo, but I was more interested in finding a great place to enjoy some Mexican food…!

Now, I was interested in Cinco de Mayo, but it seems like all of Tampa was interested in Cinco de Drinko. Brass Tap down in Ybor had both!

IMG_6728

I was expecting Ybor to be much more packed since it was Cinco de Mayo–although it was on a Thursday. We arrived around 5:30 PM and given that it was the day we weren’t expecting any odd quirks or uncomfortable mishaps, but of course we had our fair share of experiences. Walking up to Brass Tap, it was rather empty so we were able to take our pick of the chairs. Brass Tap has an open bar area where you can look out on the sidewalk and road.

Now, Brass Tap is definitely no Mexican place, so it’s not like we expected deliciously appetizing tacos. But they were just $2.00! And with that, we went ahead and ordered two tacos each (between fish and chicken) and a margarita. (…It is the drink to drink)

The margarita was so delicious. Iced with no salt. I say no salt because the last time I ordered a margarita they stirred the salt with the drink and it tasted like pure sewage water…! Brass Tap’s margarita is made with Jose Cuervo. Yumm yumm, very refreshing. Now for the tacos…

You kind of have to just trust your gut on these tacos, since there was no menu listing what sorts of toppings go with each taco. As long as you’re not picky, just go for it! Out of both tacos, Brass Tap’s chicken tacos were so amazing. The shell, as you can see, seems to be baked a bit to where it is crunchy, however not enough for it to be a crunchy taco. The shell was the perfect combination of soft & crunchy. The chicken taco was nicely seasoned and went well with the cabbage. As for the fish taco, the miscellaneous dressing on top and the pickled red peppers didn’t pair well with me. I’m all for a fish taco, but I’m not fond when the fish is made in a breaded-fried style.

Since Ybor was mostly dead, and we were definitely not feeling the Cinco de Mayo festivities, we decided to head to the one place we knew for SURE would be Cinco festive…

Want to take a guess?

Yes, Tijuana Flats.

This was the place to go. Very festive. Very packed. And a great deal. Their regular Burrito Thursday deal: $5.99 Burrito, chips, drink. For Cinco de Mayo? For $1.00 more you could add a beer on draft (or $2.00 for bottled). Since Corona is known to be a Mexican beer, it was obvious that it would be the beer of choice. Now, we’ve reviewed Tijuana Flats before, but this was oriented more towards the tacos. Not that the burrito is much different in deliciousness, filling, and satisfactory marks. It was great!

I usually love all the toppings they provide, but really I regret the jalapeño peppers this time. I feel like they put all the seeds on purpose just to watch me suffer. And of course the one thing that doesn’t help with spiciness? BEER.
